The 2007 album Peripheral Vision was created with nothing but electric guitar and processing. The first track, titled "Emergence" follows the classic Ambient formula, with long, drawn-out tones and cloudy masses of guitar drones. This is minimal and soothing music, somewhat hypnotic and very relaxing. There's nothing dark or neurotic about it; it's just pure sonic balm. "Floating Sequence" continues in similar fashion. In fact, you'd have a hard time trying to separate the two by just listening to one-minute excerpts of both. The chill continues until the next track titled "Cloudlike" takes things to darker realms, while retaining the general feel of the previous compositions. The sound has more richness to it and the tones of Ascanio's guitar are much more diverse. There's also a metallic element to the textures that was largely absent on "Emergence" and "Floating Sequence". "Everything Inside" continues where previous track left off, adding a heavier bass element to the proceedings. The sound is still extremely monolithi? and yet somehow liquid and constantly moving. "Discovery" is more icy, hypnotic and out-there. The track corresponds to its title in that it's much more active than the rest of the material and there's something of a nature-inspired atmosphere to it. Yet, instead of marine discoveries and tropical islands, one gets the impression of snowy, wind-swept landscapes, icebergs and vast glaciers. "Forgotten Medicine", however, is more meditative and emotionally neutral. It is basically pure guitar-based drone with a bit of a mystic aura about it. "The Big Sleep" is introduced with a few mysterious bass notes. This three-note motif is then repeated throughout this track, complimented by a few droning textures. The last several minutes introduce new sounds and the mood lightens up a bit. This music is cyclical, minimal and hypnotic. I think Peripheral Vision is an album for those who like their ambient music on the stark, minimal side. These long drones and ice-cold minimal atmospheres would serve well as a soundtrack to some mystery / exploration movie. Otherwise, they are well suited for active and passive listening alike.

"Peripheral Vision", CD-R che porta la firma di Ascanio Borga, cela 60 minuti di allestimenti sonori per ambienti siderali, sette strumentali allungati fra carezzevoli correnti minimal music, lambiti da drones evaescenti e nuclei di armonie stratificate per chitarra. Piu' che un compositore in senso stretto l'artista romano e' un tessitore di atmosfere, un predatore di luci ed ombre che ricerca tra spazi acustici d'immateriale bellezza, attraverso le corde riverberate del su strumento preferito, e le iridescenze che dipinge come ologrammi nell'etere.

Era da un po' di tempo che non sentivo menzionare Ascanio Borga, tanto che dopo qualche comunicazione saltuaria della sua mailing list mi domandavo se stesse facendo uscire nuovo materiale. Ed ironia della sorte (o più che altro, gioie della tempistica) eccolo di ritorno con questo nuovo “Peripheral Vision”. Se la costante con il lavoro che lo precede è sempre quella della natura ambientale del disco, direi che fra “Bad Ground” e “Peripheral Vision” a livello di atmosfera si passa dalla notte al giorno, infatti le atmosfere dark ambientali dello scorso episodio lasciano il campo alla luce. Borga si arma di chitarra e va in droning e fin qui potrebbe confondersi con i millemila gruppi ormai calati nel genere vuoi grazie a questo o a quel musicista, la differenza sta tutta nel gusto e credo in quello che un anglofono inserirebbe nel ‘know how’ visto che il musicista romano sembra avere un orecchio molto allenato. L'accostamento più facile che nel quale potrei cadere è quello degli Stars Of The Lid anche se per fortuna “Peripheral Vision” non è così palloso (sulla classe del gruppo texano comunque non discuto). Psichedelia quindi? Non so, semmai parlerei di music ambient-drone che in altri tempi mi sarei aspettato per etichette come la Kranky o simili. Melodico, sognante sì, ma se c'è una cosa che rimane dal primo disco di Borga è una bella base di malinconia. Un'ora di musica su un disco che seppur molto omogeneo (beh!, la cosa è voluta) è frammentato in tracce e saliscendi sufficientemente dosati cosicché si arriva alla fine del disco senza venirne sopraffatti, cosa che spesso non accade neppure con molti mostri sacri del genere per i quali l'ascolto diventa quasi una gara di resistenza. Marzullo avrebbe detto ‘la musica è un sogno o i sogni aiutano a fare musica del genere?’, bella domanda a cui vi demando la risposta, per il resto direi molto più semplicemente che mi inquadra bene questo bel lavoro di Borga.

Exactly one year ago, we reviewed the first three releases by Italy's Ascanio Borga (see Vital Weekly 550), even when those releases were quite old already. On his fourth release, 'Peripheral Vision', he continues to explore the vast area of ambient music. The previous lot showed he was capable of producing various forms of ambient, cosmic in one, more industrial in the other two, but here he goes out, all the way into the 'real' ambient music. Heavily textured music, all played on a guitar, but he could have fooled me. I assume this all goes through a whole bunch of computerized environment (I don't know why I think so, but Borga has 'a formal background in mathematics and works in the software industry', maybe that's why). It shares common ground with the work of Vidna Obmana (mid nineties) and whatever was released by Hypnos (also in the same period). It makes this music heavily dated, but that's not really a big problem. To re-new the music area of ambient is not necessary, if not impossible, but in general it's also not of concern for those who play ambient, like Borga. His goal is deliver an hour worth of music that creates a beautiful environment for the listener and as such he succeeds wonderfully well.

Il ricordo di una emersione. L'ascesa verso la luce rosea e avvolgente di un'alba dopo una lunga notte, un risveglio nelle profondità del mare mentre si lievita raggiungendo i raggi di luce che trapassano la superficie lontana.
Il ricordo di un fluttuare nelle profondità di sé mentre si è trasportati verso l'alto dalla propria massa corporea. Qualcosa che fa pensare alla morbidezza delle nuvole e alla loro vastità. Una viaggio a ritroso che riporta la coscienza a quel momento prima di essa, quell'attimo in cui scopriamo di venire al mondo. L'angoscia di uno spazio chiuso e insieme lo stupore del movimento e della generazione .
L'inizio del sonno. Quello spazio crepuscolare tra la paura di perdersi e la leggerezza dell'abbandono. L'esperienza che si prova e si dimentica nello stesso momento in cui si cade addormentati.
